Grant of a License to Evade Tolls, 1248

The collection of tolls was farmed out at market places on some occasions, and the farmers of the impost could issue licenses of evasion.

June 19th. We, Gaubert Puybressen and John Delorme, money-changers, citizens of Marseilles, with the authority given to us by the council of the city of Marseilles for levying the market tax on all men of Savonne, for ourselves and our associates, give license and full liberty to you, John Banous of Savonne, to come with confidence and security to Marseilles, with all your goods and with those of another, whatever you wish, free and quit of the said tax granted and conceded to us, but paying nevertheless two denarii for each pound of the said goods from now to the feast of St. Michael next coming, and, from the said feast, for one full and complete year.

Done at Marseilles, near the tables of the money-changers.

Witnesses, etc.
