In 1648 All of East-Central Europe was affiliated in some way with three "old" polities - The Holy Roman Empire, The Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, and the Ottoman Empire.

By 1795, after the division
of Poland, more "modern" polities had come to dominate. The HRE was to be abolished in 1806, Poland had disappered a polity and the Ottomans had lost vast territories in eastern Europe and north of the Black Sea. Now dominant were the Habsburg Empire/Austria, and Prussia, and Russia.
