Genesis 13:13, 18:20-22, 19:4-8. 19:24-25,
Sodom story
KJV
Gen 13:13 But the men of Sodom were wicked and sinners
before the LORD exceedingly.
Gen 18:20-22 And the LORD said, Because the cry
of Sodom and Gomorrah is
great, and because their sin is very grievous; I
will go down now, and see whether they have done altogether according
to the cry of it, which is come unto me; and if not, I will know.
And the men turned their faces from thence, and went toward Sodom:
but Abraham stood yet before the LORD.
Gen 19:4-28 But before they lay down, the men
of the city, even the men of Sodom, compassed the house round,
both old and young, all the people from every quarter: And they
called unto Lot, and said unto him, Where are the men which came
in to thee this night? bring them out unto us, that we may know
them. Gen 19:6 And Lot went out at the door unto them, and
shut the door after him, Gen 19:7 And said, I pray you, brethren,
do not so wickedly. Gen 19:8 Behold now, I have two daughters
which have not known man; let me, I pray you, bring them out
unto you, and do ye to them as is good in your eyes: only unto
these men do nothing; for therefore came they under the shadow
of my roof. Gen 19:9 And they said, Stand back. And they
said again, This one fellow came in to sojourn, and he will needs
be a judge: now will we deal worse with thee, than with them.
And they pressed sore upon the man, even Lot, and came near to
break the door. Gen 19:10 But the men put forth their hand,
and pulled Lot into the house to them, and shut to the door.
Gen 19:11 And they smote the men that were at the door of
the house with blindness, both small and great: so that they wearied
themselves to find the door. Gen 19:12 And the men said unto
Lot, Hast thou here any besides? son in law, and thy sons, and
thy daughters, and whatsoever thou hast in the city, bring them
out of this place: Gen 19:13 For we will destroy this place,
because the cry of them is waxen great before the face of the
LORD; and the LORD hath sent us to destroy it. Gen 19:14
And Lot went out, and spake unto his sons in law, which married
his daughters, and said, Up, get you out of this place; for the
LORD will destroy this city. But he seemed as one that mocked
unto his sons in law. Gen 19:15 And when the morning arose,
then the angels hastened Lot, saying, Arise, take thy wife, and
thy two daughters, which are here; lest thou be consumed in the
iniquity of the city. Gen 19:16 And while he lingered, the
men laid hold upon his hand, and upon the hand of his wife, and
upon the hand of his two daughters; the LORD being merciful unto
him: and they brought him forth, and set him without the city.
Gen 19:17 And it came to pass, when they had brought them
forth abroad, that he said, Escape for thy life; look not behind
thee, neither stay thou in all the plain; escape to the mountain,
lest thou be consumed. Gen 19:18 And Lot said unto them, Oh,
not so, my Lord: Gen 19:19 Behold now, thy servant hath found
grace in thy sight, and thou hast magnified thy mercy, which
thou hast showed unto me in saving my life; and I cannot escape
to the mountain, lest some evil take me, and I die: Gen 19:20
Behold now, this city is near to flee unto, and it is a little
one: Oh, let me escape thither, (is it not a little one?) and
my soul shall live. Gen 19:21 And he said unto him, See,
I have accepted thee concerning this thing also, that I will
not overthrow this city, for the which thou hast spoken. Gen
19:22 Haste thee, escape thither; for I cannot do any thing
till thou be come thither. Therefore the name of the city was
called Zoar. Gen 19:23 The sun was risen upon the earth when
Lot entered into Zoar. Gen 19:24 Then the LORD rained upon
Sodom and upon Gomorrah brimstone and fire from the LORD out
of heaven; Gen 19:25 And he overthrew those cities, and all
the plain, and all the inhabitants of the cities, and that which
grew upon the ground. Gen 19:26 But his wife looked back from
behind him, and she became a pillar of salt. Gen 19:27 And
Abraham gat up early in the morning to the place where he stood
before the LORD: Gen 19:28 And he looked toward Sodom and
Gomorrah, and toward all the land of the plain, and beheld, and,
lo, the smoke of the country went up as the smoke of a furnace.
NRSV
Gen 13:13 Now the people of Sodom were wicked, great
sinners against the LORD.
Gen 18:20-22 Then the LORD said, "How great
is the outcry against Sodom and Gomorrah and how very grave their
sin! [21] I must go down and see whether they have done altogether
according to the outcry that has come to me; and if not, I will
know." [22] So the men turned from there, and went toward
Sodom, while Abraham remained standing before the LORD.
Gen 19:4-28 But before they lay down, the men of
the city, the men of Sodom, both young and old, all the people
to the last man, surrounded the house; [5] and they called to
Lot, "Where are the men who came to you tonight? Bring them
out to us, so that we may know them." [6] Lot went out of
the door to the men, shut the door after him, [7] and said, "I
beg you, my brothers, do not act so wickedly. [8] Look, I have
two daughters who have not known a man; let me bring them out
to you, and do to them as you please; only do nothing to these
men, for they have come under the shelter of my roof." [9]
But they replied, "Stand back!" And they said, "This
fellow came here as an alien, and he would play the judge! Now
we will deal worse with you than with them." Then they pressed
hard against the man Lot, and came near the door to break it down.
[10] But the men inside reached out their hands and brought Lot
into the house with them, and shut the door. [11] And they struck
with blindness the men who were at the door of the house, both
small and great, so that they were unable to find the door. [12]
Then the men said to Lot, "Have you anyone else here? Sons-in-law,
sons, daughters, or anyone you have in the city--bring them out
of the place. [13] For we are about to destroy this place, because
the outcry against its people has become great before the LORD,
and the LORD has sent us to destroy it." [14] So Lot went
out and said to his sons-in-law, who were to marry his daughters,
"Up, get out of this place; for the LORD is about to destroy
the city." But he seemed to his sons-in-law to be jesting.
[15] When morning dawned, the angels urged Lot, saying, "Get
up, take your wife and your two daughters who are here, or else
you will be consumed in the punishment of the city." [16]
But he lingered; so the men seized him and his wife and his two
daughters by the hand, the LORD being merciful to him, and they
brought him out and left him outside the city. [17] When they
had brought them outside, they said, "Flee for your life;
do not look back or stop anywhere in the Plain; flee to the hills,
or else you will be consumed." [18] And Lot said to them,
"Oh, no, my lords; [19] your servant has found favor with
you, and you have shown me great kindness in saving my life; but
I cannot flee to the hills, for fear the disaster will overtake
me and I die. [20] Look, that city is near enough to flee to,
and it is a little one. Let me escape there--is it not a little
one?--and my life will be saved!" [21] He said to him, "Very
well, I grant you this favor too, and will not overthrow the city
of which you have spoken. [22] Hurry, escape there, for I can
do nothing until you arrive there." Therefore the city was
called Zoar. [23] The sun had risen on the earth when Lot came
to Zoar. [24] Then the LORD rained on Sodom and Gomorrah sulfur
and fire from the LORD out of heaven; [25] and he overthrew those
cities, and all the Plain, and all the inhabitants of the cities,
and what grew on the ground. [26] But Lot's wife, behind him,
looked back, and she became a pillar of salt. [27] Abraham went
early in the morning to the place where he had stood before the
LORD; [28] and he looked down toward Sodom and Gomorrah and toward
all the land of the Plain and saw the smoke of the land going
up like the smoke of a furnace.
Genesis 39:1-6 Potiphar and Joseph
Gen 39:1 And Joseph was brought down to Egypt; and
Potiphar, an officer of Pharaoh, captain of the guard, an Egyptian,
bought him of the hands of the Ishmeelites, which had brought
him down thither. Gen 39:2 And the LORD was with Joseph, and
he was a prosperous man; and he was in the house of his master
the Egyptian. Gen 39:3 And his master saw that the LORD was with
him, and that the LORD made all that he did to prosper in his
hand. Gen 39:4 And Joseph found grace in his sight, and he served
him: and he made him overseer over his house, and all that he
had he put into his hand. Gen 39:5 And it came to pass from the
time that he had made him overseer in his house, and over all
that he had, that the LORD blessed the Egyptian's house for Joseph's
sake; and the blessing of the LORD was upon all that he had in
the house, and in the field. Gen 39:6 And he left all that he
had in Joseph's hand; and he knew not ought he had, save the bread
which he did eat. And Joseph was a goodly person, and well favoured.
Note: Babylonian Talmud Sotah 13b, suggests
that Potiphar, a eunuch, was sexually interested in Joseph.

Lev 18:22 Thou shalt not lie with mankind, as
with womankind: it is abomination.
Lev 20:13 If a man also lie with mankind, as he
lieth with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination:
they shall surely be put to death; their blood shall be upon
them.

31-32 (the word Deava means "devil")
O Maker of the material world, thouh Holy One! Who
is the man who is a Deava?....
Ahura Mazda answered: The man that lies with mankind
as man lies with womankind, or as a woman lies with womankind,
is the man that is a Deava; this one is the man that is a worshipper
of Deavas, that is a male paramour of the Deavas, that is a she-Deava;
that is the man that is in his inmost self a Deava, that is in
his whole being a Deaval this is the man that is a Deava before
he dies, and becomes one of the unseen Deavas after death; so
is he, whether he has lain with mankind as mankind, or as womankind.

Ruth 1:16-17, Ruth's pledge to Naomi
Ruth 1:3 And Elimelech Naomi's husband died; and
she was left, and her two sons. Ruth 1:4 And they took them
wives of the women of Moab; the name of the one was Orpah, and
the name of the other Ruth: and they dwelled there about ten years.
Ruth 1:5 And Mahlon and Chilion died also both of them; and the
woman was left of her two sons and her husband. Ruth 1:6 Then
she arose with her daughters in law, that she might return from
the country of Moab: for she had heard in the country of Moab
how that the Lord had visited his people in giving them bread.
Ruth 1:7 Wherefore she went forth out of the place where she
was, and her two daughters in law with her; and they went on
the way to return unto the land of Judah. Ruth 1:8 And Naomi
said unto her two daughters in law, Go, return each to her mother's
house: the LORD deal kindly with you, as ye have dealt with the
dead, and with me.Ruth 1:9 The LORD grant you that ye may
find rest, each of you in the house of her husband. Then she
kissed them; and they lifted up their voice, and wept. Ruth 1:10
And they said unto her, Surely we will return with thee unto
thy people. Ruth 1:11 And Naomi said, Turn again, my daughters:
why will ye go with me? are there yet any more sons in my womb,
that they may be your husbands? Ruth 1:12 Turn again, my daughters,
go your way; for I am too old to have an husband. If I should
say, I have hope, if I should have an husband also to night, and
should also bear sons; Ruth 1:13 Would ye tarry for them till
they were grown? would ye stay for them from having husbands?
nay, my daughters; for it grieveth me much for
your sakes that the hand of the LORD is gone out
against me. Ruth 1:14 And they lifted up their voice, and wept
again: and Orpah kissed her mother in law; but Ruth clave unto
her. Ruth 1:15 And she said, Behold, thy sister in law is gone
back unto her people, and unto her gods: return thou after thy
sister in law. Ruth 1:16 And Ruth said, Entreat me not
to leave thee, or to return from following after thee: for whither
thou goest, I will go; and where thou lodgest, I will lodge: thy
people shall be my people, and thy God my God: Ruth 1:17 Where
thou diest, will I die, and there will I be buried: the LORD
do so to me, and more also, if ought but death part thee and me.
Ruth 1:18 When she saw that she was stedfastly minded to go
with her, then she left speaking unto her.
Quite apart from the lesbian reading of this passage,
note that the Bible has some problems here. Ruth becomes the grandmother
of King David, but she is a Moabite women, and the Deuteronomic
code and Nehemiah both comment about this. Deuteronomy and Nehemiah
were written long after the Story of Ruth and reflect the problems
- and nationalism - of post-exilic Judaism. Interestingly Deuteronomy
and Nehemiah do not agree; buut Deuteronomy would exclude King
David from the congregation of the Lord and Nehemiah would exclude
Jesus of Nazareth.
See:
Deu 23:3 An Ammonite or Moabite shall not enter
into the congregation of the LORD; even to their tenth generation
shall they not enter into the congregation of the LORD for ever:
Neh 13:1 On that day they read in the book
of Moses in the audience of the people; and therein was found
written, that the Ammonite and the Moabite should not come into
the congregation of God for ever;

Judg 19:22 Now as they were making their hearts
merry, behold, the men of the city, certain sons of Belial, beset
the house round about, and beat at the door, and spake to the
master of the house, the old man, saying, Bring forth the man
that came into thine house, that we may know him. Judg 19:23
And the man, the master of the house, went out unto them, and
said unto them, Nay, my brethren, nay, I pray you, do not so wickedly;
seeing that this man is come into mine house, do not this folly.
Judg 19:24 Behold, here is my daughter a maiden, and his concubine;
them I will bring out now, and humble ye them, and do with them
what seemeth good unto you: but unto this man do not so vile
a thing. Judg 19:25 But the men would not hearken to him: so
the man took his concubine, and brought her forth unto them;
and they knew her, and abused her all the night until the morning:
and when the day began to spring, they let her go. Judg 19:26
Then came the woman in the dawning of the day, and fell down
at the door of the man's house where her lord was, till it was
light. Judg 19:27 And her lord rose up in the morning, and
opened the doors of the house, and went out to go his way: and,
behold, the woman his concubine was fallen down at the door of
the house, and her hands were upon the threshold. Judg 19:28
And he said unto her, Up, and let us be going. But none answered.
Then the man took her up upon an ass, and the man rose up, and
gat him unto his place. Judg 19:29 And when he was come into
his house, he took a knife, and laid hold on his concubine, and
divided her, together with her bones, into twelve pieces, and
sent her into all the coasts of Israel. Judg 19:30 And it was
so, that all that saw it said, There was no such deed done nor
seen from the day that the children of Israel came up out of the
land of Egypt unto this day: consider of it, take advice, and
speak your minds.
I Samuel 18 on, II Samuel 1:26, David
and Jonathan
The Love Story and Covenant Between David and
Jonathan
1 Sam 17:57-18:9
And as David returned from the slaughter of the Philistine,
Abner took him, and brought him before Saul with the head of the
Philistine in his hand. And Saul said to him, Whose son art thou,
thou young man? And David answered, I am the son of thy servant
Jesse the Bethlehemite. And it came to pass, when he had
made an end of speaking unto Saul, that the soul of Jonathan was
knit with the soul of David, and Jonathan loved him as his own
soul. And Saul took him that day, and would let him go
no more home to his father's house. Then Jonathan and David
made a covenant, because he loved him as his own soul. And Jonathan
stripped himself of the robe that was upon him, and gave it to
David, and his garments, even to his sword, and to his bow, and
to his girdle. And David went out whithersoever Saul sent
him, and behaved himself wisely: and Saul set him over the men
of war, and he was accepted in the sight of all the people, and
also in the sight of Saul's servants. And it came to pass as
they came, when David was returned from the slaughter of the Philistine,
that the women came out of all cities of Israel, singing and dancing,
to meet king Saul, with tabrets, with joy, and with instruments
of music. And the women answered one another as they played,
and said, Saul hath slain his thousands, and David his ten thousands.
And Saul was very wroth, and the saying displeased him; and he
said, They have ascribed unto David ten thousands, and to me they
have ascribed but thousands: and what can he have more but the
kingdom? And Saul eyed David from that day and forward.
[Saul's daughter also falls in love with David
in chapter 18]
I Sam 19: 1-6
1 Sam 19:1 And Saul spake to Jonathan his son, and
to all his servants, that they should kill David. But Jonathan
Saul's son delighted much in David: and Jonathan told David, saying,
Saul my father seeketh to kill thee: now therefore, I pray thee,
take heed to thyself until the morning, and abide in a secret
place, and hide thyself: And I will go out and stand beside my
father in the field where thou art, and I will commune with my
father of thee; and what I see, that I will tell thee. And
Jonathan spake good of David unto Saul his father, and
said unto him, Let not the king sin against his servant, against
David; because he hath not sinned against thee, and because his
works have been to thee-ward very good: For he did put his life
in his hand, and slew the Philistine, and the LORD wrought a great
salvation for all Israel: thou sawest it, and didst rejoice: wherefore
then wilt thou sin against innocent blood, to slay David without
a cause? And Saul hearkened unto the voice of Jonathan: and Saul
sware, As the LORD liveth, he shall not be slain. And Jonathan
called David, and Jonathan showed him all those things. And Jonathan
brought David to Saul, and he was in his presence, as in times
past.
I Sam 20:1-42
And David fled from Naioth in Ramah, and came and
said before Jonathan, What have I done? what is mine iniquity?
and what is my sin before thy father, that he seeketh my life?
And he said unto him, God forbid; thou shalt not die: behold,
my father will do nothing either great or small, but that he will
show it me: and why should my father hide this thing from me?
it is not so. And David sware moreover, and said, Thy father
certainly knoweth that I have found grace in thine eyes;
and he saith, Let not Jonathan know this, lest he be grieved:
but truly as the LORD liveth, and as thy soul liveth, there is
but a step between me and death. Then said Jonathan unto
David, Whatsoever thy soul desireth, I will even do it for thee.
And David said unto Jonathan, Behold, to morrow is the new moon,
and I should not fail to sit with the king at meat: but let me
go, that I may hide myself in the field unto the third day at
even. If thy father at all miss me, then say, David earnestly
asked leave of me that he might run to Bethlehem his city: for
there is a yearly sacrifice there for all the family. If he say
thus, It is well; thy servant shall have peace: but if he be very
wroth, then be sure that evil is determined by him. Therefore
thou shalt deal kindly with thy servant; for thou hast brought
thy servant into a covenant of the LORD with thee: notwithstanding,
if there be in me iniquity, slay me thyself; for why shouldest
thou bring me to thy father? And Jonathan said, Far be it from
thee: for if I knew certainly that evil were determined by my
father to come upon thee, then would not I tell it thee? Then
said David to Jonathan, Who shall tell me? or what if thy father
answer thee roughly? And Jonathan said unto David, Come, and
let us go out into the field. And they went out both of them into
the field. And Jonathan said unto David, O LORD God of Israel,
when I have sounded my father about to morrow any time, or the
third day, and, behold, if there be good toward David, and I then
send not unto thee, and show it thee; The LORD do so and much
more to Jonathan: but if it please my father to do thee evil,
then I will show it thee, and send thee away, that thou mayest
go in peace: and the LORD be with thee, as he hath been with my
father. And thou shalt not only while yet I live show me the kindness
of the LORD, that I die not: But also thou shalt not cut off
thy kindness from my house for ever: no, not when the LORD hath
cut off the enemies of David every one from the face of the earth. So Jonathan made a covenant with the house of David, saying,
Let the LORD even require it at the hand of David's enemies.
And Jonathan caused David to swear again, because he loved him:
for he loved him as he loved his own soul. Then Jonathan
said to David, To morrow is the new moon: and thou shalt be missed,
because thy seat will be empty. And when thou hast stayed three
days, then thou shalt go down quickly, and come to the place where
thou didst hide thyself when the business was in hand, and shalt
remain by the stone Ezel. And I will shoot three arrows on the
side thereof, as though I shot at a mark. And, behold, I will
send a lad, saying, Go, find out the arrows. If I expressly say
unto the lad, Behold, the arrows are on this side of thee, take
them; then come thou: for there is peace to thee, and no hurt;
as the LORD liveth. But if I say thus unto the young man, Behold,
the arrows are beyond thee; go thy way: for the LORD hath sent
thee away. And as touching the matter which thou and I have spoken
of, behold, the LORD be between thee and me for ever. So David
hid himself in the field: and when the new moon was come, the
king sat him down to eat meat. And the king sat upon his seat,
as at other times, even upon a seat by the wall: and Jonathan
arose, and Abner sat by Saul's side, and David's place was empty.
Nevertheless Saul spake not any thing that day: for he thought,
Something hath befallen him, he is not clean; surely he is not
clean. And it came to pass on the morrow, which was the second
day of the month, that David's place was empty: and Saul said
unto Jonathan his son, Wherefore cometh not the son of Jesse to
meat, neither yesterday, nor to day? And Jonathan answered Saul,
David earnestly asked leave of me to go to Bethlehem: And he said,
Let me go, I pray thee; for our family hath a sacrifice in the
city; and my brother, he hath commanded me to be there: and now,
if I have found favour in thine eyes, let me get away, I pray
thee, and see my brethren. Therefore he cometh not unto the king's
table. Then Saul's anger was kindled against Jonathan,
and he said unto him, Thou son of the perverse rebellious woman,
do not I know that thou hast chosen the son of Jesse to thine
own confusion, and unto the confusion of thy mother's nakedness? For as long as the son of Jesse liveth upon the ground, thou shalt
not be established, nor thy kingdom. Wherefore now send and fetch
him unto me, for he shall surely die. And Jonathan answered Saul
his father, and said unto him, Wherefore shall he be slain? what
hath he done? And Saul cast a javelin at him to smite him: whereby
Jonathan knew that it was determined of his father to slay David.
So Jonathan arose from the table in fierce anger, and did eat
no meat the second day of the month: for he was grieved for David,
because his father had done him shame. And it came to pass in
the morning, that Jonathan went out into the field at the time
appointed with David, and a little lad with him. And he said
unto his lad, Run, find out now the arrows which I shoot. And
as the lad ran, he shot an arrow beyond him. And when the lad
was come to the place of the arrow which Jonathan had shot, Jonathan
cried after the lad, and said, Is not the arrow beyond thee?
And Jonathan cried after the lad, Make speed, haste, stay not.
And Jonathan's lad gathered up the arrows, and came to his master.
But the lad knew not any thing: only Jonathan and David knew
the matter. And Jonathan gave his artillery unto his lad, and
said unto him, Go, carry them to the city. And as soon
as the lad was gone, David arose out of a place toward the south,
and fell on his face to the ground, and bowed himself three times:
and they kissed one another, and wept one with another, until
David exceeded. And Jonathan said to David, Go in peace, forasmuch
as we have sworn both of us in the name of the LORD, saying, The
LORD be between me and thee, and between my seed and thy seed
for ever. And he arose and departed: and Jonathan went
into the city.
I Sam 23:14-18
And David abode in the wilderness in strong holds,
and remained in a mountain in the wilderness of Ziph. And Saul
sought him every day, but God delivered him not into his hand.
And David saw that Saul was come out to seek his life: and David
was in the wilderness of Ziph in a wood. And Jonathan Saul's
son arose, and went to David into the wood, and strengthened his
hand in God. And he said unto him, Fear not: for the hand of
Saul my father shall not find thee; and thou shalt be king over
Israel, and I shall be next unto thee; and that also Saul my father
knoweth. And they two made a covenant before the LORD: and David
abode in the wood, and Jonathan went to his house.
II Sam 1-27
2 Sam 1:1 Now it came to pass after the death of
Saul, when David was returned from the slaughter of the Amalekites,
and David had abode two days in Ziklag; It came even to pass
on the third day, that, behold, a man came out of the camp from
Saul with his clothes rent, and earth upon his head: and so it
was, when he came to David, that he fell to the earth, and did
obeisance. And David said unto him, From whence comest thou? And
he said unto him, Out of the camp of Israel am I escaped. And
David said unto him, How went the matter? I pray thee, tell
me. And he answered, That the people are fled from the battle,
and many of the people also are fallen and dead; and Saul and
Jonathan his son are dead also. And David said unto the young
man that told him, How knowest thou that Saul and Jonathan his
son be dead? And the young man that told him said, As
I happened by chance upon mount Gilboa, behold, Saul leaned upon
his spear; and, lo, the chariots and horsemen followed hard after
him. And when he looked behind him, he saw me, and called unto
me. And I answered, Here am I. And he said unto me, Who art thou?
And I answered him, I am an Amalekite. He said unto me again,
Stand, I pray thee, upon me, and slay me: for anguish is come
upon me, because my life is yet whole in me. So I stood
upon him, and slew him, because I was sure that he could not live
after that he was fallen: and I took the crown that was upon his
head, and the bracelet that was on his arm, and have brought them
hither unto my lord. Then David took hold on his
clothes, and rent them; and likewise all the men that were with
him: And they mourned, and wept, and fasted until even, for Saul,
and for Jonathan his son, and for the people of the LORD,
and for the house of Israel; because they were fallen by the sword.
And David said unto the young man that told him, Whence art thou?
And he answered, I am the son of a stranger, an Amalekite. And David said unto him, How wast thou not afraid to stretch
forth thine hand to destroy the LORD'S anointed? And David called
one of the young men, and said, Go near, and fall upon him. And
he smote him that he died. And David said unto him, Thy blood
be upon thy head; for thy mouth hath testified against thee, saying,
I have slain the LORD'S anointed. And David lamented with this
lamentation over Saul and over Jonathan his son: (Also
he bade them teach the children of Judah the use of the bow: behold,
it is written in the book of Jasher.)
The beauty of Israel is slain upon thy high
places: how are the mighty fallen!
Tell it not in Gath, publish it not in the streets
of Askelon;
lest the daughters of the Philistines rejoice,
lest the daughters of the uncircumcised triumph.
Ye mountains of Gilboa, let there be no dew,
neither let there be rain, upon you, nor fields of
offerings:
for there the shield of the mighty is vilely cast
away,
the shield of Saul, as though he had not been anointed
with oil.
From the blood of the slain, from the fat of the
mighty,
the bow of Jonathan turned not back,
and the sword of Saul returned not empty.
Saul and Jonathan were lovely and pleasant
in their lives,
and in their death they were not divided:
they were swifter than eagles, they were stronger
than lions.
Ye daughters of Israel, weep over Saul, who clothed
you in scarlet,
with other delights, who put on ornaments of gold
upon your apparel.
How are the mighty fallen in the midst of the battle!
O Jonathan, thou wast slain in thine high places.
I am distressed for thee, my brother Jonathan:
very pleasant hast thou been unto me:
thy love to me was wonderful, passing the love
of women.
How are the mighty fallen, and the weapons of war
perished!
II Sam 9:1-13
And David said, Is there yet any that is left
of the house of Saul, that I may show him kindness for Jonathan's
sake? And there was of the house of
Saul a servant whose name was Ziba. And when they had called him
unto David, the king said unto him, Art thou Ziba? And he said,
Thy servant is he. And the king said, Is there not yet any of
the house of Saul, that I may show the kindness of God unto him?
And Ziba said unto the king, Jonathan hath yet a son, which
is lame on his feet. And the king said unto him, Where
is he? And Ziba said unto the king, Behold, he is in the house
of Machir, the son of Ammiel, in Lodebar. Then king David sent,
and fetched him out of the house of Machir, the son of Ammiel,
from Lodebar. Now when Mephibosheth, the son of Jonathan, the
son of Saul, was come unto David, he fell on his face, and did
reverence. And David said, Mephibosheth. And he answered, Behold
thy servant! And David said unto him, Fear not: for I will
surely show thee kindness for Jonathan thy father's sake, and
will restore thee all the land of Saul thy father; and thou shalt
eat bread at my table continually. And he bowed himself,
and said, What is thy servant, that thou shouldest look upon such
a dead dog as I am? Then the king called to Ziba, Saul's servant,
and said unto him, I have given unto thy master's son all that
pertained to Saul and to all his house. Thou therefore, and thy
sons, and thy servants, shall till the land for him, and thou
shalt bring in the fruits, that thy master's son may have food
to eat: but Mephibosheth thy master's son shall eat bread alway
at my table. Now Ziba had fifteen sons and twenty servants. Then
said Ziba unto the king, According to all that my lord the king
hath commanded his servant, so shall thy servant do. As for Mephibosheth,
said the king, he shall eat at my table, as one of the king's
sons. And Mephibosheth had a young son, whose name was Micha.
And all that dwelt in the house of Ziba were servants unto Mephibosheth.
So Mephibosheth dwelt in Jerusalem: for he did eat continually
at the king's table; and was lame on both his feet.
II Samuel 3:28-29, Men who spin
2 Sam 3:28 And afterward when David heard it, he
said, I and my kingdom are guiltless before the LORD for ever
from the blood of Abner the son of Ner: 2 Sam 3:29 Let it rest
on the head of Joab, and on all his father's house; and let there
not fail from the house of Joab one that hath an issue, or that
is a leper, or that leaneth on a staff, or that falleth on the
sword, or that lacketh bread.
Note: The phrase "leaneth on a staff" seems
to be a reference to effeminate men who stay at home and spin.

Ezekiel 16:49-50 Ezekiel says what was Sodom's
sin
Ezek 16:51 Neither hath Samaria committed half
of thy sins; but thou hast multiplied thine abominations more
than they, and hast justified thy sisters in all thine abominations
which thou hast done. Ezek 16:49 Behold, this was the iniquity
of thy sister Sodom, pride, fulness of bread, and abundance of
idleness was in her and in her daughters, neither did she strengthen
the hand of the poor and needy. Ezek 16:50 And they were haughty,
and committed abomination before me: therefore I took them away
as I saw good. Ezek 16:51 Neither hath Samaria committed half
of thy sins; but thou hast multiplied thine abominations more
than they, and hast justified thy sisters in all thine abominations
which thou hast done.
Daniel 1 Daniel and the chief eunuch
Dan 1:1 In the third year of the reign of Jehoiakim
king of Judah came Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon unto Jerusalem,
and besieged it. Dan 1:2 And the Lord gave Jehoiakim king of
Judah into his hand, with part of the vessels of the house of
God: which he carried into the land of Shinar to the house of
his god; and he brought the vessels into the treasure house of
his god. Dan 1:3 And the king spake unto Ashpenaz the master
of his eunuchs, that he should bring certain of the children of
Israel, and of the king's seed, and of the princes; Dan
1:4 Children in whom was no blemish, but well favoured, and
skilful in all wisdom, and cunning in knowledge, and understanding
science, and such as had ability in them to stand in the king's
palace, and whom they might teach the learning and the
tongue of the Chaldeans. Dan 1:5 And the king appointed them
a daily provision of the king's meat, and of the wine which he
drank: so nourishing them three years, that at the end thereof
they might stand before the king. Dan 1:6 Now among these were
of the children of Judah, Daniel, Hananiah,Mishael, and Azariah:
Dan 1:7 Unto whom the prince of the eunuchs gave names: for
he gave unto Daniel the name of Belteshazzar; and to Hananiah,
of Shadrach; and to Mishael, of Meshach; and to Azariah, of Abednego.
Dan 1:8 But Daniel purposed in his heart that he would not
defile himself with the portion of the king's meat, nor with the
wine which he drank: therefore he requested of the prince of the
eunuchs that he might not defile himself. Dan 1:9 Now
God had brought Daniel into favour and tender love with the
prince of the eunuchs.
Dan 1:10 And the prince of the eunuchs said unto Daniel, I
fear my lord the king, who hath appointed your meat and your drink:
for why should he see your faces worse liking than the children
which are of your sort? then shall ye make me endanger my head
to the king. Dan 1:11 Then said Daniel to Melzar, whom the
prince of the eunuchs had set over Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael,
and Azariah, Dan 1:12 Prove thy servants, I beseech thee, ten
days; and let them give us pulse to eat, and water to drink. Dan
1:13 Then let our countenances be looked upon before thee,
and the countenance of the children that eat of the portion of
the king's meat: and as thou seest, deal with thy servants.Dan
1:14 So he consented to them in this matter, and proved them
ten days.Dan 1:15 And at the end of ten days their countenances
appeared fairer and fatter in flesh than all the children which
did eat the portion of the king's meat.Dan 1:16 Thus Melzar
took away the portion of their meat, and the wine that they should
drink; and gave them pulse. Dan 1:17 As for these four children,
God gave them knowledge and skill in all learning and wisdom:
and Daniel had understanding in all visions and dreams.Dan 1:18
Now at the end of the days that the king had said he should
bring them in, then the prince of the eunuchs brought them in
before Nebuchadnezzar. Dan 1:19 And the king communed with
them; and among them all was found none like Daniel, Hananiah,
Mishael, and Azariah: therefore stood they before the king. Dan
1:20 And in all matters of wisdom and understanding, that the
king inquired of them, he found them ten times better than all
the magicians and astrologers that were in all his realm. Dan
1:21 And Daniel continued even unto the first year of king
Cyrus.
The point here is that a: Daniel and the other
young men were probably eunuchs, as was recognised by the early
Christian commentators. There is also the "tender love"
relationship between Daniel and the Chief eunuch. Compare also
Deuteronomy 23:1 which prohibts eunucgs from the congregation
of the Lord.
Joel 3:3 (Vulgate 4:3) Boys given as harlots
Joel 3:3 And they have cast lots for my people;
and have given a boy for an harlot, and sold a girl for wine,
that they might drink.
Amos 4:11 Mention of Sodom
Amos 4:11 I have overthrown some of you, as God
overthrew Sodom and Gomorrah, and ye were as a firebrand plucked
out of the burning: yet have ye not returned unto me, saith the
LORD.
Zephaniah 2:9 Mention of Sodom
Zep 2:9 Therefore as I live, saith the LORD of
hosts, the God of Israel, Surely Moab shall be as Sodom, and the
children of Ammon as Gomorrah, even the breeding of nettles,
and saltpits, and a perpetual desolation: the residue of my people
shall spoil them, and the remnant of my people shall possess them.

Wisdom 3:13-14 Barren women/ eunuchs blessed
Compare Deuteronomy 23:1 which prohibts eunuchs
from the congregation of the Lord.
Wis 3:13 For blessed is the barren women who is undefiled,
who has not entered into a sinful union, she will have fruit when
God examines souls. Wis 3:14 Blessed also is the eunuch whose
hands have done no lawless deed, and who has not devised wicked
things against the lord; for special favor will be shownhim for
his faithfulness and a place of great delight in the temple of
the Lord.
Wisdom 10:6-8 Destruction of Sodom.
Wis 10:6 Wisdom rescused a righteous man when the
ungodly were perishing; he escaped the fire that descended on
the five cities. Wis 10:7 Evidence of their wickedness still remains;
a continually smoking wasteland, plants bearing fruit that does
not ripen, a pillar of salt standing as a monument to an unbelieving
soul. Wis 10:8 For because they passed wisdom by, they not only
were hindered from recognizing the good, but also left for humankind
a reminder of their folly, so that their failures could never
go unnoticed.
Wisdom 14:23-26 Cultic Homosexuality
Wis 14:22 Then it was not enough for them to err
about the knowledge of God, but through living in great strife
due to ignorance they call such great evils peace. Wis 14:23 For
whether they kill children in their initiations, or celebrate
secret mysteries, or hold frenzied revels with stange customs,
Wis 14:24 they no longer keep either their lives or their marriages
pure, but they either treachourously kill one another, or gireve
one another by adultery, Wis 14:25 and all is a raging riot of
blood and murder, theft and deciet, corruption, faithlessness,
tumult, perjury, Wis 14:26 cobfusion over what is good, forgetfulness
of favours, defiling of souls, sexual perversion, disorder in
marriages, adultery and debauchery
Note: an important passage in that it is probable
that St. Paul had it in mind when he wrote about the effects of
idolatry in Romans 1.
Wisdom 19:13-14 Hositility to Guests at Sodom
Wis 19:13 The punishments did not come upon the sinners
without prior signs in the violence of thunder, for they justly
suffered because of their wicked acts, for they practiced a more
bitter hatred of strangers. Wis 19:14 Others had refused to receive
guests when they came to them, but these made slaves of guests
who were there benefactors.

Matthew 8:5-13/Luke 7:1-10 Centurion
and his "pais"
Mat 8:5 And when Jesus was entered into Capernaum,
there came unto him a centurion, beseeching him, Mat 8:6 And
saying, Lord, my servant lieth at home sick of the palsy, grievously
tormented.
Mat 8:7 And Jesus saith unto him, I will come and
heal him. Mat 8:8 The centurion answered and said, Lord, I am
not worthy that thou shouldest come under my roof: but speak the
word only, and my servant shall be healed. Mat 8:9 For I am a
man under authority, having soldiers under me: and I say to this
man, Go, and he goeth; and to another, Come, and he cometh; and
to my servant, Do this, and he doeth it. Mat 8:10 When Jesus
heard it, he marvelled, and said to them that followed, Verily
I say unto you, I have not found so great faith, no, not in Israel.
Mat 8:11 And I say unto you, That many shall come from the east
and west, and shall sit down with Abraham, and Isaac, and Jacob,
in the kingdom of heaven. Mat 8:12 But the children of the kingdom
shall be cast out into outer darkness: there shall be weeping
and gnashing of teeth. Mat 8:13 And Jesus said unto the centurion,
Go thy way; and as thou hast believed, so be it done unto thee.
And his servant was healed in the selfsame hour.
Luke 7:1 Now when he had ended all his sayings in
the audience of the people, he entered into Capernaum. Luke 7:2
And a certain centurion's servant, who was dear unto him, was
sick, and ready to die. Luke 7:3 And when he heard of Jesus,
he sent unto him the elders of the Jews, beseeching him that he
would come and heal his servant. Luke 7:4 And when they came
to Jesus, they besought him instantly, saying, That he was worthy
for whom he should do this: Luke 7:5 For he loveth our nation,
and he hath built us a synagogue. Luke 7:6 Then Jesus went with
them. And when he was now not far from the house, the centurion
sent friends to him, saying unto him, Lord, trouble not thyself:
for I am not worthy that thou shouldest enter under my roof: Luke
7:7 Wherefore neither thought I myself worthy to come unto thee:
but say in a word, and my servant shall be healed. Luke 7:8 For
I also am a man set under authority, having under me soldiers,
and I say unto one, Go, and he goeth; and to another, Come, and
he cometh; and to my servant, Do this, and he doeth it. Luke 7:9
When Jesus heard these things, he marvelled at him, and turned
him about, and said unto the people that followed him, I say unto
you, I have not found so great faith, no, not in Israel. Luke
7:10 And they that were sent, returning to the house, found the
servant whole that had been sick.
Note: Tom Horner points out that in Matthew, the
earlier account, the word for servent is "pais" - which
means "boy", but can also mean "servant",
and, given the rather greater than average concern for a servent
demonstrated by the centurion. can mean "lover". Luke,
who was writing in a much more Greek milieu changes the word "pais",
presumably aware of its implications, to the much more neutral
"doulos" ("servent" or "slave").
Jesus, clearly, does not condemn the centurion in this story of
faith.

Mat 10:15 Verily I say unto you, It shall be more

Matthew 11:23-24 Jesus on Sodom
Mat 11:23 And thou, Capernaum, which art exalted
unto heaven, shalt be brought down to hell: for if the mighty
works, which have been done in thee, had been done in Sodom, it
would have remained until this day. Mat 11:24 But I say unto
you, That it shall be more tolerable for the land of Sodom in
the day of judgment, than for thee.

and we know not where they have laid him.
John 21:7 Therefore that disciple whom Jesus loved
saith unto Peter, It is the Lord. Now when Simon Peter heard that
it was the Lord, he girt his fisher's coat unto him, (for he was
naked,) and did cast himself into the sea.
John 21:20 Then Peter, turning about, seeth the
disciple whom Jesus loved following; which also leaned on his
breast at supper, and said, Lord, which is he that betrayeth thee?
Acts 8:26-39 Philip and the Ethiopian eunuch
Acts 8:26 And the angel of the Lord spake unto
Philip, saying, Arise, and go toward the south unto the way that
goeth down from Jerusalem unto Gaza, which is desert. Acts 8:27
And he arose and went: and, behold, a man of Ethiopia, an eunuch
of great authority under Candace queen of the Ethiopians, who
had the charge of all her treasure, and had come to Jerusalem
for to worship, Acts 8:28 Was returning, and sitting in his
chariot read Esaias the prophet. Acts 8:29 Then the Spirit
said unto Philip, Go near, and join thyself to this chariot. Acts
8:30 And Philip ran thither to him, and heard him read the
prophet Esaias, and said, Understandest thou what thou readest?
Acts 8:31 And he said, How can I, except some man should guide
me? And he desired Philip that he would come up and sit with him.
Acts 8:32 The place of the scripture which he read was this,
He was led as a sheep to the slaughter; and like a lamb dumb before
his shearer, so opened he not his mouth: Acts 8:33 In his humiliation
his judgment was taken away: and who shall declare his generation?
for his life is taken from the earth. Acts 8:34 And the eunuch
answered Philip, and said, I pray thee, of whom speaketh the prophet
this? of himself, or of some other man? Acts 8:35 Then Philip
opened his mouth, and began at the same scripture, and preached
unto him Jesus. Acts 8:36 And as they went on their way, they
came unto a certain water:and the eunuch said, See, here is water;
what doth hinder me to be baptized? Acts 8:37 And Philip said,
If thou believest with all thine heart, thou mayest. And he answered
and said, I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God. Acts
8:38 And he commanded the chariot to stand still: and they
went down both into the water, both Philip and the eunuch; and
he baptized him. Acts 8:39 And when they were come up out of
the water, the Spirit of the Lord caught away Philip, that the
eunuch saw him no more: and he went on his way rejoicing.
Romans 1:18-32 Paul on effects of idolatry
Rom 1:18 For the wrath of God is revealed from
heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who
hold the truth in unrighteousness; Rom 1:19 Because that which
may be known of God is manifest in them; for God hath showed it
unto them. Rom 1:20 For the invisible things of him from the
creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the
things that are made, even his eternal
power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse:
Rom 1:21 Because that, when they knew God, they glorified him
not as God, neither were thankful; but became vain in their imaginations,
and their foolish heart was darkened. Rom 1:22 Professing
themselves to be wise, they became fools, Rom 1:23 And changed
the glory of the uncorruptible God into an image made like to
corruptible man, and to birds, and fourfooted beasts, and creeping
things. Rom 1:24 Wherefore God also gave them up to uncleanness
through the lusts of their own hearts, to dishonour their own
bodies between themselves: Rom 1:25 Who changed the truth of
God into a lie, and worshipped and served the creature more than
the Creator, who is blessed for ever. Amen. Rom 1:26 For this
cause God gave them up unto vile affections: for even their women
did change the natural use into that which is against nature:
Rom 1:27 And likewise also the men, leaving the natural use
of the woman, burned in their lust one toward another; men with
men working that which is unseemly, and receiving in themselves
that recompense of their error which was meet.Rom 1:28 And
even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God
gave them over to a reprobate mind, to do those things which are
not convenient; Rom 1:29 Being filled with all unrighteousness,
fornication, wickedness, covetousness, maliciousness; full of
envy, murder, debate, deceit, malignity; whisperers, Rom 1:30
Backbiters, haters of God, despiteful, proud, boasters, inventors
of evil things, disobedient to parents, Rom 1:31 Without understanding,
covenantbreakers, without natural affection, implacable, unmerciful:
Rom 1:32 Who knowing the judgment of God, that they which commit
such things are worthy of death, not only do the same, but have
pleasure in them that
do them.
I Corinthians 6:9-10 Paul 's list of sins.
1 Cor 6:9 Know ye not that the unrighteous shall

Gal 5:20 Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations,
wrath, strife, seditions, heresies, Gal 5:21 Envyings, murders,

do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God.
Ephesian 5:3-5 "unclean people"
Eph 5:3 But fornication, and all uncleanness, or
covetousness, let it not be once named among you, as becometh
saints; Eph 5:4 Neither filthiness, nor foolish talking, nor
jesting, which are not convenient: but rather giving of thanks.
Eph 5:5 For this ye know, that no whoremonger, nor unclean person,
nor covetous man, who is an idolater, hath any inheritance in
the kingdom of Christ and of God. Eph 5:6 Let no man deceive
you with vain words: for because of these things cometh the wrath
of God upon the children of disobedience. Eph 5:7 Be not ye
therefore partakers with them. Eph 5:8 For ye were sometimes
darkness, but now are ye light in the Lord: walk as children of
light:

to possess his vessel in sanctification and honour; 1 Thess 4:5
Not in the lust of concupiscence, even as the Gentiles which
know not God:

of fathers and murderers of mothers, for manslayers, 1 Tim 1:10

II Peter 2:4,6-8 Mention of Sodom story
2 Pet 2:4 For if God spared not the angels that
sinned, but cast them down to hell, and delivered them into chains
of darkness, to be reserved unto judgment; 2 Pet 2:5 And spared
not the old world, but saved Noah the eighth person, a preacher
of righteousness, bringing in the flood upon the world of the
ungodly; 2 Pet 2:6 And turning the cities of Sodom
and Gomorrha into ashes condemned them with an overthrow, making
them an ensample unto those that after should live ungodly; 2

Book of Jubilees 13:17, 16:5-6, 20:5-6 Sexual
Interpretation of Sodom
Jub 13:17 ...the men of Sodom were sinners exceedingly.
Jub 16:5-6 ....the Lord executed his judgemenst on
Sodm and Gemorrsh, and Zeboim, and all the region of the jordan,
and he burned them with fire and brimstone, and destroyed them
until this day, even as [lo] I have decalred unto thee all their
works, that they are wicked and sinners exceedingly, and that
they defile themselves and commit fornication in their flesh,
and work uncleanness on the earth. And in like manner, God willexecute
judgement on the places where thay have done according to the
uncleanness of the Sodomites, like unto the judgement of Sodom.
Jub 20-5-6 And [Abraham] told [his sons and grandsons]
of the judgement of the giants, and the judgements of the Sodomites,
how they had been judged on account of their wickedness, and had
dies on account of fornication and uncleanness, and mutual corruption
through fornication.
"'And guard yourselves from all fornication
and uncleanness,
And from all pollution of sin,
Lest ye make our name a course,
And your whole life a hissing,
And all your sons be destroyed by the sword,
And ye become accursed like Sodom,
Ans all your remnant as the sons of Gemorrah."'

A List of All the Eunuchs in the Bible
Note: The word for eunuch is translated by the word
highlighted: In most cases in the Hebrew scriptures the root
word is:
cariyc, saw-reece';
or caric, saw-reece'; from an unused root mean. to castrate;
a eunuch; by impl. valet (espec. of the female apartments), and
thus a minister of state:--chamberlain, eunuch, office
In Gen 40:1-23, 41:9, I Ki 10:5, 2 Chron 9:4, Neh
1:11 the root word is
mashqeh, mash-keh';
from H8248; prop. causing to drink, i.e. a butler; by impl. (intrans.)
rink (itself); fig. a well-watered region:--butler (-ship), cupbearer,
drink (-ing), fat pasture, atered.
It is less certain that this means "eunuch",
although it is used about a variety of servants who would ofetn
have been eunuchs. [think of Ganymede, cupbearer to the Greek
Gods].
