Abbot of St. Mary of Tronchiennes:
Relief for Succession to a Fief, 1233
I, Stephen by the grace of God, Abbot of St. Mary of Tronchiennes and of the convent of
that place, make known to the living and to posterity that Robert Woerm of Nivelles and
his wife Anna hold in fief from this church ten bonaria of land, more or less, in the
parish of Nivelles, lying next to the road, on this condition: that, whoever succeeds to
the possession of the said land, on the death or demise of both of them, and as often as
any shall succeed, they will be under obligation to pay to the said church for relief or
redemption of the land one hundred solidi (Flemish) and no more. Therefore, the said
Robert, and whoever shall hold the land after him, shall not be held to owe military
service or other duties to any one, except, by chance, it should come to pass that an
expedition be made for the defense of our common fatherland. Moreover, the tenants of that
land shall be free from molestation by citation to court forever . . . except it happen
that they be cited or called for the defense of the inheritance of our church. In
testimony whereof we have confirmed this document with our seal.
Done at Tronchiennes, in the year of Our Lord, 1233, on the Feast of the Purification.
