Lease and Guarantee for Rental Property, 1254
In the name of the Lord. September twenty-ninth, in the year of the Incarnation 1254.
Be it known to all men that I, Arnaud Gasc, fishmonger, confess and acknowledge to you,
John de Manduel, that I owe you forty solidi in royal crowns for the rent of a house which
is in front of your house in which you live near the fishmarket; I promise by this
agreement that those forty solidi in royal crowns will be given and paid to you the said
John, or to your servants, next Christmas day, under pledge of all my goods. I promise
that all expenses incurred in seeking or collecting that debt I will repay to you or your
servants, and I shall believe your simple word in the matter. I renounce the period of
twenty days and four months and all other delay and legal forms, and I swear upon the Holy
Gospels of God that I will not break this agreement.
To this I, Raymond Alverguas, under pledge of all my goods, constitute myself as the
principle debtor to you, the said John, for the forty solidi in royal crowns, contracting
to pay you or your servants on the day agreed upon, and to adhere to the terms written
above. I renounce the law De principali prius conveniendo and the respite of twenty
days and four months and all other delays and law.
Witnesses, etc.
